Morocco, just a cannon's shot from Gibraltar and the ports of Spain, has always commanded the
respect and fascinated the imagination of Europe and the world. Perched on the northwest corner
of the African continent, it is encased in four mountain chains and isolated by three seas: the
Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the sand sea of the Sahara.
Day 1 - International flight or ferry from Spain
Day 2
Makhababikoum! From the port of Tangier drive east over the Anjera hills to the city of
Tetouan, the heirs of Granada— settled by refugees from Andalucia whose Moorish culture is
clearly identifiable in the streets of the old city. Continue your drive south to Chefchaouen and
then on to Fès for the first of two nights of your journey.
Day 3
Begin your guided tour of Fes, the extraordinary walled medieval city that stands at the
heart of Moroccan culture. This is the fabled city from 1001 Arabian Nights. Visits the Bou Inania
Madrassa and the Karaouyine Mosque, then the pungent Tannery district. Tour the city walls
founded by Sultan Moulay Idriss II in the year 800 (the most oldest of all Moroccan imperial
cities). Visit Bab Boujeloud,the famous Blue Gate leading to médersé Attarîn and Bou Inania,
(some of the oldest “colleges/mosques”) known by the richness of their interior decoration, to the
apogee of merinide art ,the palace and Nejjarine fountain and the andalous area. Walk in the
souks(markets): Attarine souk with fragrant and multicoloured spices, boilermaker souk with
drums and boilerworks, trays and chisels, teapots and vases. After visiting the Zaouia of Sultan
Moulay Idriss, which is the home of Idriss II shrine.
Day 4
This day will take you to Meknes with a visit to Jamai Palace with Bab el Mansour, one of
the most famous north African gates. Made for Sultan Moulay Ismaïl, it is the coronation of his
work as a founder. Later in the morning, discover of the old imperial city: Moulay Ismaïl palace, its
stables and Héri Es Souani. Your afternoon, will be dedicated to the beautiful roman site of
Volubilis: vestiges of Triomphe bow and its famous mosaic, classified as a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO, then the saintly city of Moulay Idriss which terraces its white, cubic houses on two
rocky spurs. It is an important place of pilgrimage, because it shelters the shrine of Sultan Moulay
Idriss, the founder of the Idrissides dynasty. Then return to Fes for Dinner and an overnight.
Day 5
The Middle Atlas - In the morning pick up the old caravan trail south, stopping at Midelt
before crossing the nomad-grazed high plateau of the Middle Atlas and stopping overnight in
Midelt.
Day 6
Today you will descend along the Ziz palmery (gorge) to the Tafilalt oasis, one of the
largest in the world, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. There visit Tafilalt, including the sad,
empty mound that was once the glittering medieval city of Sigilmassa. Continue on to Er Rachidia
& Erfoud. Later you will enjoy a camel ride to witness the spectacular sunset over the sand dunes
of the desert of Merzouga—overnight under Bedouine Khaima.
Day 7
Merzouga to Ouarzazate—follow a chain of oasis palmeries west through the old market
town of Tinerhir and the extraordinary tapering towers of the kasbahs along the Dades oasis
valley—here you leave the main road for the Todra Gorge with its vividly contrasting colours of
bright green vegetation set against red, brown and orange rock faces and overnight in
Ouarzazate.
Day 8
Travel today from Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Aït Ben Haddou. Cross the High Atlas
mountains, stopping at the celebrated Kasbah village of Aït Benhaddou before twisting through
the high passes—descend through woodlands on the north face of the mountains then down to
the red city of Marrakech.
Day 9
Marrakech, the second oldest imperial city, conjures up images of Arabian nights with
modern comforts combined. Often referred to as the Ochre city. Take your guided tour of the city
and enjoy a day of strolling through markets, almost as they have been for a thousand years.
Day 10
